Chapter Twenty

Charity

“Charity!”

A firm hand came down on the steering wheel with a thud. I followed the line of a muscular tattooed arm to find Max with wide, panicked eyes.

“Did you see him?”

I flipped my seatbelt over my shoulder and bolted from the car—their shouts fading behind me.

Where did he go?

I spun around, making it down the embankment to hit the tree line, when Nico wrapped his arms around my waist and jerked me back against him.

Sharp pain sliced through my abdomen that had me slamming my eyes shut, and the air pulled from my lungs.

“Charity, stop. What’s wrong? Who did you see?”

“He was there. Did you see him? It’s not possible.”

It wasn’t real. It couldn’t have been, but I saw him with my own eyes. He had those same clothes on from the night it happened. There was still blood on his face and mud caking his hair. My heart slammed into my chest, giving out hope for the smallest possibility it could be true. That I have been living this hardcore nightmare for the last couple of weeks and nothing was real.

“Josh, he was right here.”

I squirmed from his grasp and spun around to look all around me. Max and Luca stood beside Nico with equal expressions of worry.

“She’s breaking,” Luca said to them.

Am I? Have I lost my fucking mind? Of course I have. My brother was dead, I watched it happen. I felt his blood warm my hands and his eyes gloss over with death. He was gone but haunting me.

Wait, where are we?

I threaded my fingers through my hair and pulled, just to feel the tiny prickles of pain lace through my scalp, hoping it would pull me from this world into the next—be it worse or better. Anything was better than living in a world you didn’t know was real or not.

“She’s just tired. When was the last time she slept, Max?”

Their words battled through the fog covering the part of my brain that held logic firmly in place. I must have been hallucinating. It’s been well over twenty-four hours since I slept, and this resulted from that.

I collapsed to my knees in the dirt and grass, just as Nico came up beside me. Clutching my chest, I took a deep breath, hoping it would slow my racing heart, but also to bring back oxygen to my brain so I could think clearly. Nico kneeled beside me and ran his hand down my back.

They say an insane person doesn’t realize they have lost their mind.

“I don’t know, I'm sure it’s been a while.”

Nico’s scent of citrus and leather tugged me through the fog until I could look at him with clarity.

Have you ever had a night terror where the dream is so real, you were sure there was a monster that stood above you in bed or a spider crawling your wall? How that ghost sat on your chest and sucked the life from you as your significant other slept peacefully? This was me, sleepwalking, in a daze, seeing my dead brother.
